Spring
One of the most ancient and traditional crops in the Asturian lands is the Escanda, or spelt wheat, a winter cereal that since Romans days, or even before, has been sown in the region. The spelt wheat was very important in the local economy of farmers until about a century ago, but at the present time its cultivation has decreased notably and only in some mountainous villages in the central zone of Asturias are small quantities still being harvested, among which is Grado County, where this cereal is still cultivated.
