Historical archives revealed that Rouge de Bordeaux (RDB) appeared probably around 1865 in Lectoure, in Southwestern France, then started moving toward Bordeaux (still in Southwestern France) and toward Central France during the years 1870–1871 Vilmorin‐Andrieux Companie 1880 RDB was present in at least 75% of French departments in 1912 (Brétignière 1912). Afterward, its use began to decline as it was replaced by more productive varieties. RDB is thus a population‐variety characterized by its ear type, which is red and awnless.
