In 1971 I met Earl Clark in Kansas. In 1912 at the age of 15 Mr. Clark found a plant with Black Hulls in a field of Turkey Red . The wheat had come from Russia in 1903. He increased the wheat and released Black Hull 5 years later. Black Hull was a huge improvement over existing varieties and thousands of acres were planted. The genes of Black Hull are in many modern varieties. Mr. Clark released about 25 varieties in his life. Clark's Cream was released in 1971. It is a tall beardless wheat with strong straw and tightly wrapped seeds. K State sent totes to China for research at their request. They thought that Clark's Cream resistance to pre-harvest sprouting was the result of their tight wrapping. It has a value higher than many red wheats.
